Pageant Outfits

You can find more information here about what's required for Pageant outfits.  Additional information about outfits is also available on the Frequently Asked Questions page of this web site.

You'll need to bring a formal dress, interview outfit, and casual clothes for rehearsals & parties.  You will have purchased the official production number outfit, but you must bring white tennis shoes and white socks.  Our production number outfit will have Capri pants unlike the picture to the  right.  Check additional information for each of these below.  More information is included in Newsletter #1, which you receive after you apply by filling out and sending in the application.

Your competition outfits should fit you perfectly.  Have your clothing altered to fit, paying special attention to the length of the sleeves, hemline and fit through the torso area.

Formal Dress

You will need one formal dress. Be sure your dress style is appropriate for your age division. Those items not allowed include wearing trains, hats, gloves or hoop skirts.

You may wear the formal dress of your choice.  It may be floor length (or tea length for Princess level).  White is not required!  It may be any color.  You may wear the same gown both nights of the pageant.  If you're buying a new evening gown for the New Mexico state pageant, you may want to follow the national pageant eveningwear rules (see below) so that if you qualify for Nationals, you won't have to buy another gown.  Don't buy a new formal dress for the state pageant if you already have one or if you can borrow one from a friend.  Many of our state queens win in borrowed dresses.

Your shoes should be died to match, clear or should complement your outfit.  Sweethearts, Princesses, and Preteens must have flat or low heels under two inches.  (Ballet slippers are acceptable with eveningwear.)

Required National Pageant Eveningwear Rules
(not required for state pageant)

Teens, Junior Teens, Preteens, Sweethearts, and Princesses
Your gown should be simple, elegant, and appropriate for your age.  The hemline of your gown should be even and floor length.  Your shoes should not show when you are standing still, but the skirt should not drag or buckle when you walk.  Straight skirts or tight fitting gowns with slits up the side, front, or back are discouraged.  Gowns may be trimmed or lightly decorated with sequins, beads, pearls, or rhinestones, but you should not wear a full sequin or heavily beaded gown.

Coeds
Your gown should be elegant with an even hemline.  The skirt may be full or straight, but straight skirts should not have slit that reaches any higher than you knee.  Plunging necklines and bare midriffs are discouraged.

Interview Outfit

Girls in the Teen and Junior Teen Division should choose something suitable for a job interview. Girls in the Pre-Teen, Sweetheart, & Princess Divisions should choose something suitable for church, preferably a suit for Pre-Teen and Sweetheart. Be sure your shoes and accessories compliment your outfit. Please do not wear hats, gloves or carry a purse. This outfit will be for your interview and your poise and appearance judging on stage.  Do not wear a formal dress for the interview competition.  You may wear sheer or opaque hose.  Princess contestants may wear anklet socks.  Do not wear pants.

Junior Teens, Teens and Coeds:  This outfit should be conservative and suitable for a job interview, preferably a suit.  Skirt may be no shorter than one inch above the knee.

Preteens, Sweethearts, and Princesses: This outfit should be suitable for church or a dress-up occasion.

Your shoes should be died to match, clear or should complement your outfit.  Taupe shoes are also acceptable for the interviews.

Official Production Outfit

All the girls in the pageant perform several dance numbers for the audience in their production number outfits.  This opportunity provides more experience and skill in working with others and presentation in front of an  audience.  Contestants pay for and keep their production outfits.  Our 2008 pageant outfit is shown to the left.

Our choreographers will work with the girls during pageant weekend to teach them everything they need to know!  This is one of the most exciting and favorite parts of the pageant for most girls.  They have fun learning along side other contestants with professionals to learn an exciting and entertaining production.

Choreographers work with the girls for three or more sessions before finale night.  Dance moves are age appropriate for the different groups.

2008 Outfit - Design by DesignWorks

Pageant outfits have been of different types in the past, such as those shown below.   Because learning the production number is one of the favorite parts of the pageant for most contestants, teaches the contestants important skills, and it sets the pace and mood for finale night, we've favored a more professional looking outfit shown above over the pants and t-shirt outfits.

Casual clothes

Don't forget to bring casual clothes for rehearsals & parties!

Appearance

Makeup

Princesses, Sweethearts, and Preteens:  Absolutely no makeup is allowed.  If a judge can tell you are wearing makeup, points will be deducted from your score.  Judges determine how many points to deduct.  It is better to play it safe and not wear any makeup at all.

Junior Teens, Teens, and Coeds:  Your makeup should give you a natural, all-American look.

Hairstyles

Hair should be in a neat, conservative style, brushed away from eyes and face.  No bushy, fuzzy, bouffant hairstyles.  Work for a natural, all-American hairstyle that is easy to manage.

What Not to Wear

Do not wear or carry gloves, purses, hats, parasols, plastic jewelry, long earrings, neck bands, body or hair glitter, heavy makeup, visible body piercing or tattoos, feathers, flowers, corsages, hoop skirts, trains, uneven hemlines, big sleeves, or large ruffles.

Your Escort

During the judging of poise and appearance in eveningwear, you will be escorted.  If you choose to bring your own escort to the event, such as your dad, granddad, uncle, brother, or a male friend, he must be appropriately attired.  Escorts must wear a suit with a dress shirt and tie, a military uniform, or a conventional tuxedo.  Rehearsal with escorts is scheduled before eveningwear competition.  If you do not bring an escort, one will be provided for you.
